Christopher Quint wrote up a cheap fix for a common annoyance in Flicka Friends #54 (Fall 2013). Kathleen Fay (hull #297) had been building up soot on her transom and the starboard side of her rudder after the first tank of fuel was half consumed, and rather than wait until he could get at the injector and fuel pump he clamped a one-foot length of two-inch vinyl pool drain hose over the 40 mm exhaust thru-hull. He cut the outboard end in a convex crescent so the mouth collapses like a joker valve to keep seawater and other boats' wakes out, and it closes down again when she squats at the stern under sail, while the exhaust belches out freely when she is underway. At $1.59 a foot it ended the soot altogether and cut the exhaust smell downwind; he has since had the engine parts rebuilt and has left the hose on anyway.
